Inspired by Alex Handy
Alex's legacy lives on through the people whose lives he touched -- from those who knew him well, to those who never met him, yet were inspired by his story.
Ann Handy, children's book author (and Alex's mom)
Ann Handy presents the "Jackson Chronicles," stories featuring a boy named Jackson who is frustrated by being misunderstood in school, has a best friend named Billy, and loves Fridays. Through the stories, Jackson experiences the ups-and-downs of growing up, and learning that about the most important aspects in life—the love of family and friends.
The Maple Tree
The Maple Tree begins on Jackson's favorite day of the week—Friday! On this particular Friday, Billy can tell that Jackson is feeling really down. Through their adventures and even a little mischief, Jackson and Billy learn the value of having one good friend who is always by your side, appreciating the parents who support them, and always doing the right thing for those they care about.
The Maple Tree is available to purchase online, through Publish America.
The Fishing Trip
The Fishing Trip begins on Jackson’s favorite day of the week—Friday! But this Friday, when he arrives from school, his mom and dad can tell that Jackson is not feeling like himself. To help him feel better, Jackson’s dad takes him on a fishing trip. On this trip, the two realize how important the father-son relationship is in a boy’s (or man’s) life.
The Fishing Trip is available to purchase online, through Publish America.
Jesse Scheie, children's book author
Author Jesse Scheie contacted us when she found the Project Alex Web site through a Google search for “shining stars.” She told us how touched she was by what we are doing to keep Alex’s memory alive. As a mother herself, she said that she could not imagine what it would be like to lose a child.
Jesse is the author of two books, Alex’s Shining Star (inspired by her own son Alex and her family) and I’m Still Shinin’ On. Our family was one of the inspirations for the book, I’m Still Shinin’ On.
Both Alex’s Shining Star and I’m Still Shinin’ On can be purchased on Amazon.com.
Jesse lives in Minnesota with her husband and two children, Alex and Mercedes.
Book covers for Jesse Scheie's two books.
Benjamin Hamilton, Eagle Scout
On September 23, 2008, Benjamin Hamilton of Northborough, Mass., received the honor of Eagle Scout from Northborough Troup 101. His Eagle Scout project was a DVD video on bike and skateboard safety, as inspired by Alex's story.
In his video, Benjamin encourages all skateboarders and bikers to wear helmets and safety pads, and obey traffic laws to stay safe while having fun!
